Ellis County, Texas, has a unique claim to fame as the "Gingerbread Capital of Texas. Ellis County public records are available to public requesters per the Texas Public Information Act. Records seekers can acquire vital records from the  Ellis County Clerk's Office. The office keeps and provides copies of birth and death records in the county. Only eligible record seekers may access birth and death records from the office in person, via mail, or online. Eligible record seekers include the registrant and immediate family members. Anyone not meeting eligibility requirements must present a certified copy of documentation stating a tangible interest in the record. A notary public must sign all record requests and include information such as the full name on the document, county and date of the event, relationship to the person on the certificate, parents' names, mailing address, and purposes of the record. In addition, it only has birth records dating back to 1850 and death records going back to 1903. Marriage records are available through the Clerk's Office at a $7 fee per copy. Record seekers must fill and submit a request form in person or via mail with a copy of a valid ID to obtain the documents. Alternatively, record seekers may access birth, marriage, divorce, and death records from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Divorce records from the department date back to 1968 and are available in person, online, or via mail. Mail requests must complete the application form.
